Guinean Authorities Ban Planned Protests By Opposition

Guinean authorities have banned a planned protest scheduled for today, 6 January 2024, by the Forces Vives de Guinée (FVG).

The opposition coalition had organised the protests in response to delays in the return to democratic rule, declaring on 31 December that it no longer recognised the transitional government due to its failure to uphold initial commitments.

In his New Year’s address, General Mamadi Doumbouya pledged a return to constitutional order by 2025, announcing a constitutional referendum in the first quarter and the lifting of restrictions on political activities.

Authorities cited the absence of a prior request for authorisation as the reason for the ban, while the opposition pointed to over 60 demonstrators allegedly killed and reports of disappearances of opponents under the current regime.

The Governor of Conakry, General Second Class Hadja M’Mahawa Sylla, has ordered security forces to ensure free movement, reinforcing President Doumbouya’s warnings of the State’s firmness in maintaining public order.
