Guinean Press Union Meets with UN to Discuss Media Freedom

The Guinean Union of Press Professionals (SPPG) held a meeting on Wednesday with the United Nations mission in Guinea to review the country’s progress towards restoring constitutional order.

Central to the discussions were concerns about the closure of private media outlets, legal actions against journalists critical of the junta, and the disappearance of leaders from the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC).

The SPPG delegation urged the UN to play an active role in safeguarding press freedom in Guinea and called for the release of FNDC leaders, highlighting the importance of an open media landscape in the transition to democratic governance.

The UN representatives acknowledged these concerns, promising to raise them with relevant international bodies and to monitor the press freedom situation closely as Guinea progresses—or struggles—toward democratic governance.

This high-stakes meeting underscores the broader need for international support to safeguard human rights and press freedom in Guinea amid its fraught political landscape.
