There are indications that, Guinea’s transitional leader, General Mamady Doumbouya may be eligible to run in the country’s upcoming presidential election.
This possibility arises from a new constitution that is expected to allow transition leaders to stand as candidates once adopted in an upcoming referendum, according to the Minister Secretary General at the Presidency.
During an official statement, General Amara Camara, the Minister Secretary General, confirmed that once the new constitution is adopted through a national referendum, the electoral calendar will prioritize the presidential election. Legislative and municipal elections will follow afterward, marking a significant shift in the political transition plan.
General Mamady Doumbouya, who assumed power following a military coup in September 2021, has led Guinea’s transition towards civilian rule.
The proposed constitutional changes have sparked both anticipation and debate, as they could open the door for Doumbouya to officially contest the presidency.
The timeline for the referendum and the subsequent elections is yet to be determined, though the government has emphasized its commitment to a transparent and democratic process.
