Ivorian Teacher Unions Announce Three-Day Strike Over Salary Demands

Teacher unions in Côte d’Ivoire, representing preschool, elementary, middle, and secondary education, have announced a three-day strike starting Tuesday.

Operating under the Inter-Union of the Ministry of National Education and Literacy (IS-MENA), these educators are calling for a salary increase and quarterly bonuses.

The decision to strike followed a meeting held by the unions this past weekend, as they seek to push the government to address their concerns over compensation.

The unions argue that current salaries and benefits do not reflect the rising cost of living and the vital role teachers play in society.

They have expressed concerns over the government’s slow response to their previous demands for better compensation and working conditions.

The unions have emphasized that the strike is not just about financial gain but also about improving the overall quality of education in the country. Adequate compensation, they argue, is critical for attracting and retaining skilled teachers, which in turn directly impacts the performance and future of students across Côte d’Ivoire.

The strike is expected to impact schools across the country.
