John Mahama Triumphs in Ghana’s Presidential Election as Vice President Bawumia Concedes

Ghana’s former President, John Dramani Mahama, has emerged victorious in the 2024 presidential election after his rival, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat on Sunday.

In a press conference held at his residence, Bawumia acknowledged Mahama’s win, confirming that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had also secured victory in the parliamentary elections.

He explained that he had personally called Mahama to congratulate him on his victory, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful transition.

Bawumia’s decision to concede ahead of the official Electoral Commission announcement was aimed at alleviating tensions, following reports of scuffles at several constituency centers where results were still being collated.

“I am making this concession speech before the official announcement by the Electoral Commission to avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country,” Bawumia stated. He added, “It is important that the world investor community continues to believe in the peaceful and democratic character of Ghana.”

Bawumia acknowledged the people’s choice, expressing respect for their decision: “The people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility.”

This marks Mahama’s return to the presidency after his defeat in the 2016 elections, and signals a new phase for Ghana’s political landscape as he prepares to assume leadership for a second term.
