Liberia’s House Speaker Faces Growing Political Pressure Over Quorum Crisis

Liberia’s House Speaker, Fonati Koffa, is grappling with increasing political opposition, as he faces another major setback due to his failure to secure a quorum in recent legislative sessions.

The Anti-Koffa Bloc, led by Nimba County Representative Samuel Kogar, has successfully rallied the support of 43 representatives. This figure leaves the opposition just six members short of the 49 representatives required to meet the quorum needed to pass their strongly worded resolution against the Speaker.

The division within the House of Representatives has been growing for months, as Speaker Koffa’s leadership has come under scrutiny.

The Anti-Koffa Bloc has openly criticized his handling of legislative matters and accused him of being unable to unite the lawmakers at a critical time for the country.

Their resolution, the contents of which remain undisclosed, is said to challenge Koffa’s authority and leadership style, signaling a potential shift in the balance of power.

What’s at Stake? If the opposition bloc reaches the necessary quorum, they will be able to formally table their resolution, which could lead to significant consequences for Koffa’s leadership.

Regional governance expert predict that the coming days could be critical for the Speaker. Should the opposition successfully reach a quorum, it may trigger further political turmoil, potentially leading to a vote of no confidence or even an attempt to remove Koffa from his position.
