Mali Renames ECOWAS Avenue to AES Avenue in Bamako

Mali has officially renamed ECOWAS Avenue in its capital city, Bamako, to AES Avenue in honor of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

This decision underscores Mali’s commitment to fostering unity and sovereignty among central Sahel nations and reflects a broader push by Malian authorities to redefine public spaces and instill national pride.

Alongside this renaming, other streets and institutions have been rededicated to honor prominent figures in the country’s history.

Public reaction to the change has been mixed.

While some citizens applaud the move as a patriotic gesture, others question its timing and symbolic significance, sparking debate on the nation’s evolving identity in a shifting geopolitical landscape.
