Malian Soldiers and Civilians Face Trial for Arms and Drug Trafficking

Malian soldiers and civilians appeared before the Bamako military court on Tuesday, facing charges of arms, ammunition, and drug trafficking.

If convicted, they could receive sentences of over 10 years in prison.

The first case involves illegal arms trafficking and sales, with a senior army officer and other military personnel accused of arms trafficking, complicity, and violating military regulations.

The second case concerns drug possession and consumption, involving a first-class soldier and a civilian.

According to the Military Justice Code, sentences could range from 1 to 5 years for misdemeanors and 5 to 10 years or more for criminal offenses.

The prosecutor highlighted the threat to public security and called on military personnel to uphold their duty.

Meanwhile, the Mopti regional military court has begun hearings on 25 cases involving 36 military personnel and five civilians.
