Mali’s transitional president, General Assimi Goïta, has appointed General Abdoulaye Maiga as Prime Minister, unveiling a new 28-member government.
The reshuffle sees the exit of seven ministers and reinforces a strong military presence in key positions.
General Maiga, who also retains the Territorial Administration portfolio, previously served as interim Prime Minister during his predecessor’s hospitalization in 2022.
Notable appointments in the new government include General Sadio Camara, who continues as Defense Minister, and General Daoud Aly Mohammedine, who remains in charge of Security. Foreign Affairs Minister Abdoulaye Diop also retains his role amidst Mali’s withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The new cabinet includes three women, among them Colonel Assa Badiallo Touré, who takes on the Health portfolio.
The government is tasked with addressing Mali’s pressing security challenges and advancing the political transition in a country grappling with instability in the Sahel region.
