Mali’s presidency has dismissed Prime Minister Choguel Maiga after his public criticism of the transitional government’s prolonged stay in power.
The announcement was delivered on Wednesday via a statement broadcast on state television, ORTM.
Maiga had recently accused the ruling transitional government of failing to uphold its commitment to organise elections within the agreed 24-month transition period aimed at restoring democracy.
Mali’s transitional leadership, which took power following coups in 2020 and 2021, initially promised elections in February.
However, the timeline was postponed indefinitely, with authorities citing technical difficulties as the cause.
Appointed prime minister in 2021, Maiga previously served as commerce minister under former President Amadou Toumani Touré and as digital economy minister under former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
