Mali’s Transitional President Goita Elected to Lead Confederation of Sahel States

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has elected Mali’s transitional president, Asimi Goita, to head the newly formed Confederation of Sahel States for a one-year term.

This decision was announced at the conclusion of the first AES summit.

On July 6, 2024, the Heads of State of the Alliance of Sahel States met and unanimously agreed to establish the Confederation of Sahel States.

Among their commitments was the provision of dedicated financial instruments to support the Confederation’s economic and social policies.

The transitional leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger also implemented mechanisms to facilitate the free movement of goods, people, and services within the AES region, promoting greater integration and cooperation among member states.
