Monrovia Authorities Confirm December Capitol Fire as Arson, Spark Nationwide Manhunt

Monrovia authorities have confirmed that the 18 December 2024 fire, which destroyed Liberia’s historic Capitol Building, was a deliberate act of arson, prompting a nationwide manhunt for those responsible.

Addressing the public during a press conference, Inspector General Gregory Coleman stated that the investigation had uncovered overwhelming evidence pointing to criminal intent.

Inspector General Coleman noted that the findings indicate a coordinated effort to ignite multiple fires within the Capitol.

The investigation ruled out faults in the building’s electrical system, eliminating the possibility of accidental causes. Instead, evidence suggests that the fire was deliberately set in several locations.

Thick, dark smoke billowing from the structure and the extent of the damage further pointed to a well-planned attack.

The investigation has already commenced, with suspects being questioned as police assure the public that arrests and prosecutions of those involved could begin within 24 hours.
