NBS Report Reveals $2.88 Billion Paid in Ransom to Kidnappers in Nigeria Over One Year

A new report from Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that between May 2023 and April 2024, a staggering $2.88 billion (₦2.23 trillion) was paid as ransom to kidnappers.

The findings, outlined in the NBS’s Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey released on Tuesday, indicate that 91% of kidnapping incidents during this period were financially motivated.

These figures underscore the rising insecurity in Nigeria and the immense financial strain it imposes on individuals and families.

The report has prompted renewed calls for the Nigerian government to enhance its efforts in tackling kidnapping and implementing effective security measures nationwide.
