Niger Accuses EU of Mishandling Flood Relief Funds, Deepening Diplomatic Rift

Niger’s transitional president has accused the European Union of mismanaging €1.3 million ($1.35 million) allocated for flood relief, alleging that the funds were distributed to international NGOs in a non-transparent manner without proper consultation with local authorities.

The European Union firmly denied the claims, with the European External Action Service (EEAS) stating, “The European Union expresses its profound disagreement with the justifications and accusations made by the transitional authorities.”

Amid the escalating tensions, the EU announced on Saturday the recall of its ambassador to Niger for consultations in Brussels. The move signals a further deterioration in relations between the EU and Niger’s junta, which has faced mounting international criticism since its seizure of power earlier this year.

While reaffirming its commitment to supporting the people of Niger, the EU emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in aid management.

The disagreement highlights ongoing challenges in balancing international aid efforts with local governance under the junta.

The ambassador’s recall marks a significant escalation in the diplomatic rift, deepening the divide between Niger and its international partners.
