Niger Floods Cause 339 Deaths and Affect Over 1 Million People

Severe flooding in Niger this year has resulted in 339 deaths and affected more than 1.17 million people, according to a report from the General Directorate of Civil Protection.

The floods, which have devastated much of the country, have also led to extensive losses in livestock, equipment, and 25,695 tons of food.

The Maradi region was the hardest hit, with 111 deaths, 19 of which were from drowning and 92 from collapsed structures.

Tahoua follows with 99 deaths, 69 from drowning and 30 from collapses, while Zinder reported 65 fatalities. Dosso, Tillabéri, and the regions of Niamey, Agadez, and Diffa were also impacted but to a lesser extent.

As of September 23, 2024, 383 people have been injured and thousands of households displaced.

The flood damage mirrors similar disasters in neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso, where severe weather has caused significant loss of life and property.

In Mali alone, 76 deaths and 649 flood incidents have been reported as of October 4.
