Nigeria and India Forge Strategic Ties on Maritime Security and Economic Development

Nigeria and India have agreed to collaborate on maritime security, intelligence sharing, and counter-terrorism during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Abuja on Sunday.

The visit followed an invitation by President Bola Tinubu, who aims to attract significant Indian investments into Nigeria.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Abuja on Saturday evening, with the two leaders holding discussions at the Presidential Villa on Sunday.

Their talks encompassed a broad spectrum of areas, including economic development, defense, healthcare, and food security, according to a joint statement.

Amid rising security concerns in the Gulf of Guinea and Indian Ocean, Nigeria and India pledged coordinated efforts to safeguard maritime trade routes and combat piracy.

President Tinubu is keen to bolster Indian investment in Nigeria’s economy to create jobs and spur growth.

Nigeria previously secured nearly $14 billion in investment commitments from Indian companies during the 2023 G20 Summit.

Among these was Jindal Steel and Power, which pledged $3 billion to develop Nigeria’s steel sector.
