Nigeria Concludes Mass Trial of Over 100 Boko Haram Fighters

The Nigerian Ministry of Justice has announced the conclusion of a mass trial for members of the extremist group Boko Haram. The trial, held over two days at a military detention center in Kanji, involved 125 fighters, all of whom were found guilty of terrorism financing and other crimes.

The Nigerian Minister of Justice, who is also the Attorney General, confirmed the outcome in a statement dated July 26.

Of the 125 Boko Haram fighters tried by the Federal High Court, 85 were convicted of terrorism financing, 22 of crimes against humanity, genocide, or war crimes, and 18 of various terrorist offenses.

The trial was monitored by representatives from the Nigerian Human Rights Commission, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to ensure procedural integrity.

This trial follows previous legal actions against Boko Haram members in 2017 and 2018.

According to the Attorney General’s office, 400 former fighters have served their sentences and have been transferred to another facility for deradicalization and reintegration.

Since 2016, Nigeria has been implementing efforts to reintegrate former Boko Haram fighters into society, aiming to address the root causes of extremism and promote lasting peace.
