Nigeria is losing an estimated $9 billion each year due to illegal mining activities.
This alarming figure was disclosed by Jonathan Gaza, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals, during a public hearing at the National Assembly.
The inquiry session was convened to address the pressing need to investigate and combat illegal mining in the country’s solid mineral sector.
Gaza highlighted the significant economic losses and the detrimental impact of these unlawful practices on Nigeria’s natural resources and environment.
The public hearing is part of a broader effort by the National Assembly to understand the extent of illegal mining operations and to develop effective strategies to curb them.
The Committee on Solid Minerals is expected to propose measures to enhance regulatory frameworks, improve enforcement, and promote sustainable mining practices.
