The Nigerian Army has neutralized 13 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Enugu State, according to a statement released by Jonah Unuakhalu, spokesperson for the Joint Task Force South East Nigeria.
The operation targeted members of the IPOB, which the Nigerian government has designated as a terrorist organization.
The group has been advocating for an independent state in southeastern Nigeria, harking back to the Republic of Biafra declared in 1967 during a civil war that claimed millions of lives.
The Republic of Biafra ultimately reintegrated into Nigeria following the end of the conflict.
However, IPOB continues its push for independence, leading to ongoing tensions in the region.
Unuakhalu emphasized that the operation was part of efforts to ensure stability and security in the area.
