The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted a large consignment of arms and ammunition at the cargo airport in Lagos State. This marks the second major bust in less than 72 hours.
The latest interception involved 55 pieces of unassembled semi-automatic short guns, discovered at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport. Adewale Adeniyi, Commissioner General of the Nigeria Customs Service, addressed the press, revealing that the operation stemmed from a piece of intelligence received by the airport command.
Adeniyi detailed that the arms were cleverly concealed within shower faucets and have an estimated value of 270,888,000 naira (approximately 177,486 dollars). He commended the diligence and swift action of the customs officers involved in the operation, emphasizing the importance of intelligence-led security measures in curbing illegal arms trafficking.
This seizure underscores the ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to combat the proliferation of illegal firearms in the country, which is crucial for maintaining national security and public safety. The Nigeria Customs Service has reiterated its commitment to tightening security at all points of entry to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Commissioner General said, further investigations are underway to trace the origins and intended recipients of the intercepted arms, as it collaborates with other security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.
