Nigerian Law Makers Investigates WAEC Over Financial Irregularities

The Nigerian Federal House of Representatives Committee on Basic Examination Bodies, has launched an investigation into the West African Examination Council (WAEC) over financial irregularities.

Head of National Office of WAEC Nigeria, Josiah Dangut, was on Tuesday questioned during the investigative hearing.

The Committee interrogated the examination body about a N6 billion deficit that is over $3.7 million USD, recorded by WAEC in the 2023 financial year and N5 billion loan equivalent to about $3million USD secured in 2022 for the procurement of customized calculators.

The Committee, dissatisfied with the responses from WAEC representatives, has ordered WAEC to submit all its bank statements from 2018 to the present within a week.

The Committee also queried WAEC for breaching the financial, public procurement and financial regulations Acts over the payment of 50 per cent of the contract for the construction of its Taraba state office worth N532 million, that is over $300 thousand USD.

The WAEC Boss has, however, requested an alternative date to present the statement of accounts and other relevant documents.
