Nigerian Police Chief Orders Investigation into Amnesty International’s Allegations of Protest Misconduct

Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has initiated an investigation into allegations of police misconduct during the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance protests, following a damning report by Amnesty International.

The 34-page report accuses police officers of excessive force, leading to the deaths of 24 protesters and the detention of 1,200 minors, particularly in northern Nigeria. The document highlights several instances of alleged rights violations, including arbitrary arrests, unlawful detentions, and the use of lethal force against demonstrators.

In response, IGP Egbetokun directed the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) to probe the claims and provide a detailed report. “These are serious allegations that must be thoroughly examined. The Nigeria Police Force is committed to accountability and the protection of human rights,” Egbetokun said in a statement.

The August 2024 protests, driven by widespread public dissatisfaction with governance issues, drew large crowds across Nigeria. However, clashes between demonstrators and security forces in some regions escalated tensions, prompting local and international condemnation.

Amnesty International has called for transparency in the investigation, urging Nigerian authorities to ensure justice for the victims.
