Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu to Address Nation Amid Protests

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has yielded to mounting pressure to address the nation amid widespread #EndBadGovernance protests that have entered their third day on Saturday.

The ex-Lagos governor, who has been at the center of rallies against economic hardship and high living costs, will speak to over 200 million citizens on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at 7:00 am, according to a statement by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale.

Since the protests began on Thursday, opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Tinubu’s rivals from the last election, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have urged him to address the youths protesting the country’s faltering economy and the resulting hardships.

Prices of food and basic commodities have soared in recent months as Nigerians grapple with one of the nation’s worst inflation rates and economic crises, fueled by the government’s dual policies of removing petrol subsidies and unifying forex windows.
