Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has dismissed five ministers and reassigned ten others in response to growing public dissatisfaction with their performance.
The cabinet reshuffle was announced during a Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday as the country grapples with rising inflation and worsening security challenges.
Key changes include renaming the Ministry of Niger Delta Development to the Ministry of Regional Development and the dissolution of the Ministry of Sports.
The ministries of tourism and arts and culture have been merged.
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the reshuffle introduced new ministers for humanitarian and poverty reduction, trade and investment, labour, and livestock development, along with junior ministers for foreign affairs, education, and housing.
The dismissed ministers include those overseeing education, tourism, women’s affairs, youth development, and the junior minister for housing.
Despite ongoing calls from critics to streamline government operations and reduce costs, Tinubu’s cabinet remains larger than that of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, who had 43 ministers during his second term. By law, the president is required to appoint a representative from each of Nigeria’s 36 states.
