Nigerien-Ivorian journalist has been formally charged by authorities in Niamey After spending two months in detention.
Serge Mathurin Adou, a seasoned journalist known for his reporting on West African political affairs, was arrested in August in Niger, where he has been based for several years.
His detention and the recent charges have sparked international concerns regarding press freedom and the safety of journalists in politically sensitive regions.
Adou, who is well-regarded for his investigative work and critical coverage of governance issues across West Africa, is now facing serious accusations of conspiring in an attempted coup in Burkina Faso, Niger’s western neighbor.
Details released by officials suggest the charges stem from his alleged involvement in communications and activities deemed supportive of an attempt to destabilize the Burkinabé government.
The charges come amid a tense political climate in the Sahel region, where multiple nations have experienced coups and rising security threats.
