Opposition Coalition in Mali Condemns Arrest of Former CMAS Coordinator

An opposition coalition in Mali, known as Supporters of the Synergy for Action, has denounced the arrest of Youssouf Daba Diawara, the former coordinator of Imam Mahmoud Dicko’s Coordination of Movements, Associations, and Sympathizers (CMAS), as a violation of human rights and freedom of expression.

Diawara was arrested last Friday by armed forces upon his return from a ceremony honoring victims of the protests that led to the ousting of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.

The arrest has sparked significant criticism and concern among opposition groups and civil society.

The Supporters of the Synergy for Action are demanding Diawara’s immediate release ahead of his scheduled court appearance on Monday.

They argue that his detention is an unjust attempt to suppress dissent and silence opposition voices.

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions and challenges in Mali as the country continues to navigate its political transition. The opposition coalition’s strong reaction underscores the fragile state of human rights and freedom of expression in the country. The international community and human rights organizations are closely monitoring the situation, advocating for fair treatment and the protection of fundamental freedoms in Mali.
