Over 200 Prisoners Escape in Nigeria Following Flood-Induced Prison Wall Collapse

Over 280 inmates escaped from a prison in Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria, after severe floods caused the collapse of the facility’s walls last week.

According to a statement from Umar Abu-Bakr, spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Services, seven of the escaped prisoners have been recaptured during security operations.

The floods, which destroyed the walls of the Medium Security Custodial Centre and staff quarters, triggered the mass escape. Abu-Bakr confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining fugitives.

Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has been severely affected by unprecedented flooding after a dam overflowed due to heavy rainfall.

The floodwaters also devastated a state-owned zoo, sending crocodiles and snakes into nearby communities.

The disaster has claimed at least 30 lives, with the national emergency agency reporting that over a million people have been affected.

Hundreds of thousands have been displaced and are currently residing in camps set up for victims.
