Private universities in Ghana are uniting efforts to improve the country’s Gross Tertiary Enrolment Ratio (GTER), which currently falls behind the national target.
Professor Mrs. Goski Alabi, Co-Founder and President of Accra Metropolitan University (formerly known as Laweh University College), reaffirmed her commitment during a ceremony at Jubilee House.
At the event, Ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo conferred Presidential Charters on 14 universities, marking a significant milestone in their academic autonomy and excellence.
Prof. Alabi highlighted that the Presidential Charter is a testament to the government’s dedication to fostering quality, access, and autonomy within Ghana’s tertiary education system.
According to TheGlobalEconomy.com, Ghana’s GTER in 2023 was 21.99%, an improvement from 20.39% in 2022. However, Ghana’s Education Strategic Plan (ESP) 2018–2030 targets a GTER of 25–40%, with the global average standing at 40.35%, based on data from 63 countries.
