A massive protest erupted in Liberia’s north-central Bong County as marketers voiced frustration over a dispute about their trading locations.
The unrest stemmed from disagreements surrounding the relocation of vendors from the old Gbarnga Central Market to the newly constructed Sirleaf Market.
Early Wednesday morning, aggrieved marketers took to the streets and stormed the County Administrative Building, shutting down the office of Bong County Superintendent Hawa Norris.
The protestors alleged unfair treatment after some vendors were reportedly allowed to continue operating at the old market site while others were compelled to move to the new location.
They demanded the removal of those still trading at the old market.
In response, local authorities, including Bong County Police Commander Fasu Sheriff, convened an emergency meeting with leaders of the protesting marketers.
The authorities urged the protesters to vacate the premises of the Gbarnga Administrative Building, assuring them of a swift resolution to the conflict.
