The Senegalese government has established guidelines for diaspora participation in the upcoming legislative elections, scheduled for November 17.
As per Decree No. 024988, issued on October 11, 2024, by the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security, voting will be conducted both within Senegal and in designated international jurisdictions.
This decree outlines the areas where Senegalese citizens abroad can vote, covering regions across North Africa, West Africa, Central Africa, Europe, the Americas, Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East.
Countries involved include Mauritania, Morocco, France, Germany, the United States, Canada, and Saudi Arabia, among others.
Following the dissolution of the National Assembly by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, this election holds significance for Senegal’s democratic progress.
The electoral system combines a majority vote for 112 seats (90 domestic and 15 diaspora) and a proportional vote for 53 seats.
The majority vote determines representation by department and diaspora constituencies, while proportional voting ensures fair representation based on each party’s share of the national vote.
The Ministry’s decision underscores a commitment to ensuring that all Senegalese citizens, including those abroad, have a voice in the country’s future.
