The Senegalese government has disputed French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent statements regarding the withdrawal of French military forces from Senegal.
Officials have labeled Macron’s remarks as “totally erroneous,” asserting that Senegal’s decision was made independently, without any prior negotiations with France.
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko addressed the issue on social media, categorically denying Macron’s assertion that the departure of French bases was mutually agreed upon.
“The decision taken by Senegal stems from its sole will, as a free, independent, and sovereign country,” Sonko stated.
The controversy follows Macron’s remarks at the Conference of Ambassadors in Paris, where he suggested that France’s military presence was vital to African sovereignty.
Sonko dismissed these claims, instead pointing to France’s role in the destabilization of Libya and its “disastrous consequences” on the stability and security of the Sahel region.
