Senegal Repatriates Nationals from Lebanon Amid Worsening Security

The Senegalese government has announced the repatriation of dozens of its nationals who were stranded in Lebanon, responding to the worsening security situation there. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko revealed that 310 Senegalese citizens were scheduled to depart Beirut on Saturday, October 19, during a fundraising event organized by his party, Pastef, ahead of the upcoming November legislative elections. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye expressed his gratitude on social media platform X, stating, “I welcomed our compatriots today with deep emotion as they returned from Lebanon,” and expressed relief over their safe return.

The Ministry of Integration and Foreign Affairs previously assured the public that all necessary steps had been taken to facilitate the evacuation. So far, 117 Senegalese citizens have been repatriated, with the plane carrying the remaining group en route to Dakar. Prime Minister Sonko emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring that no Senegalese citizen is left stranded abroad, highlighting their recent efforts in repatriating citizens from Libya, led by Secretary of State for Senegalese Abroad, Amadou Cherif Diouf.

Sonko also referenced President Faye’s recent actions in eastern Senegal, where he personally provided support to victims of a local crisis, reaffirming the government’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all Senegalese citizens, both at home and abroad.
