Senegal Secures 8 Billion CFA from World Bank for Flood Relief Efforts

The Senegalese government has received a financial boost of eight billion CFA francs from the World Bank to support emergency relief for flood-affected communities.

According to a recent World Bank press release, the organization has also contributed essential equipment and materials valued at 1.149 billion CFA francs to bolster recovery efforts.

These resources, provided under the Senegal River Valley Development and Resilience Project, include motorized pumps for water evacuation and infrastructure reinforcement, along with agricultural supplies to aid farmers impacted by the severe flooding.

Exceptionally heavy rainfall this year has led to widespread devastation near the Senegal River, affecting homes, health facilities, and schools, and leaving northern and eastern communities in critical need.

However, recent reports from the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) indicate that floodwaters have begun to recede since October 16, 2024, along the river’s 1,750-kilometer length, which spans Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal.
