The Senegalese army conducted a major operation on Thursday to dismantle an illegal gold mining site in Margou, located in the Falémé area in eastern Senegal.
The operation led to the seizure of substantial mining equipment, including 18 generators, several solar panels, and other tools used in gold extraction, highlighting the scale of the illegal activities.
The Falémé region, known for its rich gold deposits, frequently attracts clandestine gold panning, which results in significant revenue losses for the Senegalese state and poses severe environmental risks due to hazardous mining practices.
This intervention is part of a broader effort by Senegalese authorities to combat illegal mining and address its economic and environmental repercussions, particularly in border regions vulnerable to such activities.
