Senegalese Government Allocates 8 billion CFA francs to Flood Victims

The Senegalese government has allocated 8 billion CFA francs to assist disaster victims affected by recent flooding along the Senegal and Gambia rivers. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko made the announcement on Wednesday, during a Council of Ministers meeting. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye emphasized the urgency of delivering aid to those impacted by the floods and expressed the nation’s solidarity with the affected populations.

President Faye called for the immediate updating of disaster prevention plans and stressed the importance of intensifying the Emergency Response and Relief Plan. His focus includes protecting crops, livestock, and economic activities in the flooded areas. Recognizing the growing risks linked to climate change, he underscored the need to adapt civil protection systems to better manage such disasters.

He also emphasized the importance of regular monitoring of the hydrological situation in collaboration with the Senegal River Development Organization (OMVS) and the Gambia River Development Organization (OMVG). To reduce the future impacts of flooding, he recommended developing localized plans for the areas along the rivers.

The President announced that he will personally visit the Kedougou region on October 18 and 19 to provide support and show solidarity with those affected by the disaster.
