Senegalese President Faye Announces to End Foreign Military Presence in 2025

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has declared that all foreign military forces will leave Senegal by 2025, marking a significant step toward restoring national sovereignty.

The announcement came during his New Year’s Eve address to the nation.

This decision, which primarily affects France’s three military bases in Senegal, reinforces Faye’s earlier remarks during a November interview, where he hinted at this possibility ahead of the 80th anniversary of the Thiaroye massacre.

Since taking office in March 2024, Faye has emphasized transparency and good governance.

He announced plans to introduce four new laws to the National Assembly, targeting holders of elective and nominative positions involving budgetary management.

Faye also unveiled plans for a platform launching in early 2025 to allow Senegalese citizens, including those in the diaspora, to compete for public positions or propose projects and investment opportunities.

Faye also reaffirmed his commitment to achieving lasting peace in Casamance, a region that has faced long-standing conflict, underscoring his administration’s focus on stability and progress.
