The Senegalese 15th legislature on Monday elected El Malick Ndiaye as President of the National Assembly during its inaugural session. Ndiaye secured 134 votes out of 165 deputies, with 22 voting against and seven abstaining.
The session witnessed tense moments as MP Guy Marius Sagna questioned Ndiaye’s eligibility, citing his ministerial status.
However, Ayib Daffé, leader of the majority Pastef parliamentary group, confirmed Ndiaye’s resignation as Minister of Infrastructure, Land, and Air Transport, clearing the way for the vote.
Born in 1983 in Dahra Djolof in the Louga region, Ndiaye is a transport and logistics expert who joined Pastef in 2015.
With academic credentials from IAE Paris-Sorbonne and Paris Dauphine-PSL University, and professional experience at Maersk Line and Eramet, Ndiaye’s leadership is expected to strengthen Pastef’s legislative agenda and advance governance and infrastructure reforms.
