Sierra Leone Declares ‘Mpox’ Public Health Emergency

Sierra Leonean authorities have declared the “Mpox” virus a public health emergency following the confirmation of two cases.

The country’s Health Minister, Austin Demby, made the declaration on Monday after a second case of the deadly viral disease was confirmed.

The National Public Health Agency announced on social media that the second case involved a 21-year-old man who exhibited symptoms on January 6.

However, the agency added that neither of the confirmed cases had known recent contact with infected animals or other sick individuals.

Last week, Sierra Leone reported its first confirmed case of the virus since the African Union’s health watchdog declared a public health emergency over the growing Mpox outbreak on the continent last year.
