Sierra Leonean High Court Orders UNIMAK to Compensate Student

The Sierra Leonean High Court has ordered the University of Makeni (UNIMAK) to compensate Jeneba Mando Kamara with 100,000,000 Leones (over 4,000 USD) after she won a court case against the institution.

Justice M. Bawoh ruled in Jeneba’s favor, instructing UNIMAK to pay the compensation within seven working days for failing to prove its case.

The court also directed UNIMAK to provide her academic credentials and compensate her for the emotional trauma and financial expenses she incurred.

Jeneba emphasized the importance of upholding integrity in academic pursuits and highlighted her legal action as a means to clear her name and secure her future.

Miss Kamara took legal action against UNIMAK after being denied the right to graduate despite completing her course, with the university citing outstanding grade issues.

She presented evidence to challenge this claim but was ignored, prompting her to sue various university officials.

Enrolling in the second intake of the 2019/2020 academic year, Jeneba pursued a diploma in Procurement, Logistics, and Supply Chain Management and progressed to a degree course. Despite passing all her modules and being listed for graduation, she was informed days before the ceremony that she had failed some second-year modules.

This claim, which she denied, led to emotional distress and financial losses.

The university has yet to comment on the ruling as of July 30, 2024, but reports suggest it may appeal the decision.

Speaking to WAVN’s Paul Kamara, Jeneba urged students to prioritize their studies, avoid corrupt practices, and seek justice when wronged.
