Sierra Leone’s National Minerals Agency Under Fire Over Undistributed Community Development Funds

Sierra Leone’s National Minerals Agency (NMA) is under scrutiny following revelations in the 2023 Auditor General’s report that over $1 million allocated for community development projects has not been disbursed.

The funds, intended to enhance local infrastructure, education, and healthcare, remain withheld, stalling crucial development initiatives and raising concerns about the agency’s transparency and accountability.

The NMA Board justified the delay, citing the absence of monitoring reports on how previously released funds were utilized.

In response, the Director of Finance and Administration has been instructed to transfer the funds to the Mining Development Fund immediately.

Communities and civil society organizations are demanding stronger oversight mechanisms to ensure the allocated funds are effectively distributed and utilized for their intended purposes.
