At least six Nigerian soldiers and 34 extremists lost their lives during a violent altercation in Sabon Gari village, Damboa council area, Borno State, the military confirmed on Wednesday.
The attack, carried out by militants using motorcycles and gun-mounted trucks, marks another deadly episode in the region’s long-running insurgency.
Military spokesperson Edward Buba linked the assault to retaliation for the recent killing of an insurgent commander by Nigerian forces.
While the military reports progress against Boko Haram, the persistence of ambushes and bombings highlights the ongoing challenges.
Since the insurgency’s onset in 2009, Borno State has suffered over 35,000 deaths and seen 2.6 million residents displaced.
Regional Security expert cited inadequate political commitment, cross-border militant activities, and limited intelligence as significant hurdles to resolving the conflict.
