Nigeria’s National Grid has collapsed a third time in 7 days, marking the eighth grid collapse in 2024 with many states reporting total blackouts.
Small business owners have been deeply affected by these blackouts with many businesses losing productivity.
Many are unable to stay in business due to power shortages severely crippling their operations which threatens their livelihood.
Barbers, Tailors and Welders are among the most affected due to their businesses being in high demand while frozen food vendors have lamented the decline in customers due to concerns over freshness of their produce.
According to the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) a huge percentage of income that could be invested into small businesses are spent on self-generated electricity which has increased the cost of productivity.
The lack of consistent power supply has also resulted in an annual economic loss estimate of $26.2 Billion as of 2022.
