Super Eagles of Nigeria Withdraw from AFCON Qualifier Over Libyan Mistreatment

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have officially withdrawn from their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya, citing mistreatment by Libyan authorities. The decision came after the team’s flight, scheduled to land in Benghazi, was unexpectedly diverted to Al Abaq without explanation.

Stranded for over 13 hours in the airport’s arrival hall, the Nigerian team and delegation were left without access to basic necessities such as food, water, or phone connections. Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong took to his X platform to express the team’s frustration, stating, “They’ve locked the airport gates and left us without phone connection, food, or drink. All to play mind games.”

Adding to the tension, a Libyan news outlet, LibyaNewsToday, had earlier reported that the Nigerian delegation would face severe discomfort ahead of the AFCON 2025 qualifier reverse fixture.

Attempts to resolve the situation were reportedly blocked by Libyan officials, as confirmed by the Super Eagles’ Media Officer, Promise Efoghe. The fate of the match now hangs in the balance, with potential repercussions for both teams and the ongoing qualifiers awaiting action from CAF and Nigerian authorities.
