Sweden Ends Development Aid to Mali Following Diplomatic Rift with Ukraine

In response to Mali’s decision to sever diplomatic relations with Ukraine, Sweden has announced the termination of its development aid to the West African nation, amounting to several million dollars.

The move comes as Swedish authorities express their displeasure with Bamako’s decision, accusing Kyiv of supporting northern separatist groups in clashes against the Malian army in late July.

Sweden’s Minister of International Cooperation announced that the cessation of aid will take effect by the end of 2024.

The aid package, valued at $190 million, was originally intended to support various development projects in Mali from 2021 to 2025.

This decision follows Sweden’s earlier move to close its embassy in Bamako due to the worsening security situation in the country.
