Togo Partners with Nano Nuclear Energy to Boost Electricity Generation

The Togolese government has entered into a groundbreaking agreement with the American company Nano Nuclear Energy (NNE) to produce electricity using micro-nuclear reactors.

The deal, signed during a ceremony chaired by President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, involved Robert Koffi Messan Eklo, Togo’s Minister of Mines and Energy Resources, and Ian Farnan, President of the Cambridge Nuclear Energy Centre.

This initiative aligns with Togo’s national energy diversification strategy, seeking to enhance electricity access for its population, 70% of whom currently have power—primarily in urban areas.

Small modular reactors (SMRs) will be deployed as a sustainable solution to boost generation capacity, reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, and mitigate environmental impacts.

To oversee the project and promote peaceful nuclear technology applications, President Gnassingbé has announced the establishment of the Togo Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC), marking a significant step toward a progressive energy model for the sub region.
