Tragic Stampede in Nigeria Claims 35 Children Lives at Christmas Funfair

The Nigerian Police have confirmed the death of at least 35 children following a deadly stampede during a Christmas funfair held at an Islamic high school in Basorun, Ibadan, southwestern part of the country.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday during the festive event, organized by the Wings Foundation and local radio station Agidigbo FM, which drew crowds of all ages.

According to police spokesman Adewale Osifeso, six others sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Authorities have arrested eight individuals, including the event’s main sponsor, as investigations continue under the homicide section of the Criminal Investigation Department.

In response to the tragedy, President Bola Tinubu extended his condolences to the grieving families, the people of Oyo State, and the nation, offering his “heartfelt sympathies” for the loss.
