Two Ghanaians Sentenced in U.S. for $580K Elderly Romance Scam

Two Ghanaian nationals have been sentenced in the United States for their roles in a romance scam targeting elderly Americans.

Sadia Alhassan, 35, and Mohammed Saaminu Zuberu, 39, were ordered to pay $581,261.67 in restitution for defrauding victims under the guise of romantic relationships.

Alhassan and Zuberu, along with U.S. resident Shawn William Smith, 26, orchestrated the scam from March 2019 to March 2022, luring victims to send funds via phone and online communications.

Zuberu acted as the intermediary, managing funds between Alhassan, Smith, and coordinators in Ghana.

The investigation was led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, IRS Criminal Investigations, and Homeland Security Investigations, with support from multiple law enforcement agencies.
