U.S. Military Withdraws Troops from Niger Air Base in Niamey

The United States military has begun its withdrawal from Niger, starting with the evacuation of troops from the 101 Air Base in the capital, Niamey.

This move follows the recent denunciation of the military agreement between Niger and the United States, signaling a significant shift in the bilateral security relationship.

Over the weekend, the American forces officially handed over control of the air base to the Nigerien authorities. The handover ceremony was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Nigerien Army, Maman Sani Kiaou. This transfer occurred ahead of the initially planned departure deadline of September 15, indicating an expedited withdrawal process.

The 101 Air Base has been a strategic point for U.S. military operations in the region, particularly in counter-terrorism efforts. The withdrawal marks a notable change in the U.S. military presence in West Africa, with potential implications for regional security dynamics.

The U.S. Department of Defense has yet to comment on the future of its military engagements in Niger and the Sahel region. Meanwhile, Niger is expected to re-evaluate its security strategies in the wake of this significant development.
