The United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) has recorded a significant increase in terrorist violence across the Sahel and West Africa, with over 3,000 victims reported between July 1 and November 30, 2024.
The escalation is attributed to intensified activities by terrorist groups, including the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (GSIM) and the Islamic State in the Sahel (formerly EIGS).
These organizations have carried out numerous deadly attacks, exacerbating instability in the already volatile region.
Despite the growing challenges, UNOWAS emphasized the importance of ongoing regional collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts.
The agency also urged for stronger international support to address the dual security and humanitarian crises impacting the Sahel.
This rise in violence underscores the urgent need for coordinated strategies to restore stability and protect vulnerable communities in the region.
