US Army Completes Withdrawal from Agadez Air Base in Niger

The United States Army has completed the withdrawal of its equipment from air base 201 in the Agadez region, following their earlier departure from the Niamey air base in July. This was confirmed in a joint statement from American and Nigerien military authorities.

According to the American military command for Africa (Africom), coordination between the American and Nigerien armed forces will continue in the coming weeks to ensure the total withdrawal is carried out as planned. The process of withdrawing American soldiers from Niger began on May 19, 2024.

This move follows the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland (CNSP) denouncing the agreement concerning the status of military personnel of the United States and civilian employees of the United States Department of Defense on Nigerien territory. On May 19, Nigerien and American military authorities signed an agreement for the definitive withdrawal of American soldiers no later than September 15, 2024.

The completion of the withdrawal from Agadez marks a significant step in this process, reflecting ongoing changes in the military and diplomatic landscape between the United States and Niger.
